The afternoon started with a cross bar collapsing during a pre-match supporters kick about and finished with the referee being knocked over by a ball to the back of the head. That was as exciting as this dreary try-less encounter got.
Dean Ryan, the Worcesters director of rugby, pointed an accusing finger at referee JP Doyle after he tasted defeat on his return to Kingsholm for the first time since he left Gloucester 4½ years ago.
It was desperate rugby and a nervy, tense clash at Kingsholm, but Gloucester clinched the vital home victory they desired. Four Billy Twelvetrees penalties divided the two sides, as Worcester sank to their tenth league defeat.
Kick-off was delayed by 30 minutes after the pre-match big ball challenge knocked the crossbar down, much to the amusement of the 15,629 strong crowd and BT Sport.
Four penalties from England international Billy Twelvetrees helped Gloucester leap to ninth place in the Aviva Premiership as bottom side Worcester remain without a league win.
Twelvetrees’ strikes, against two from Worcester fly-half Ignacio Mieres, were all the sides could muster in a match delayed for 30 minutes in bizarre circumstances.
As part of the pre-match entertainment, fans were invited onto the pitch to try to get one of two giant inflatable balls between the posts. They brought one side of the crossbar down at the Kingsholm Road end minutes before kick-off, with groundstaff frantically trying to repair the damage and get the game on while the teams waited in the dressing rooms.
The pre-match incident was the only light amusement for the packed 15,629 crowd, with what followed being of painfully poor quality.

Good tough derby game. Onwards and upwards
Some games, the conditions require philosophy & skill. Other games, the conditions require psychopathy & guts. It’s all beautiful
Fair play to the Worcs Warriors they came here to play and put in a solid performance.
